My seedlings are dying
« on: April 07, 2011, 22:34 »
Sowed 'Leaf salad' mixture in greenhouse border a few weeks ago. It germinated but recently all the leaves turned white, withered and died. Now I see the same happening to my tomato seedlings which have been in the greenhouse but not in the soil.

Can anyone identify this and perhaps advise how to save my toms?

It's mildew if it's powdery, and botrytis if it's furry............all moulds that grow when it's damp.

If you pick off the affected leaves, and make sure they have enough ventilation you may save them. As a last resort they can be sprayed with Bordeaux mixture or Bayers Fuit & Vegetable Disease Control

Looks like its only on the seed leaves? The plants won't miss those ...

Bottom water only (stand pots in a container of water for 10 minutes), to avoid getting the foliage and soil surface wet.

Fingers crossed!

Thanks folks, will follow all advice.

I have never had this before. Suspect a high concentration of the spores (or whatever) in my greenhouse. How best to sterilise before planting?

I like this one, doesn't smell disgusting like Jeyes fluid does, and won't harm your plants if anything gets accidentally splashed ;)
