Leeks not growing?
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:47 »
About a month ago I planted some leeks which I bought from the market.  Unfortunately since that time they haven't gown at all, though the leaves are nice and healthy looking.

They are about 8ins above the soil elven and only about 5mm in diameter.  I don't know what variety they are, could they be an over-wintering type?

Will I ever get to pick a nice leek for winter broth?

My leeks didn't grow particularly well last year but what they lacked in girth, they made up in flavour and many pots of soup were consumed.  As with most home grown veg, teh taste is far superior.  This year however my leeks are much improved because I have them growing in the bedding and poo that I had taken out of my hen house in the previous six months.

I wouldn't worry - there is still a lot of growing time for them. Mine are currently less than the thickness of a finger but i am confident they will bulk up before the winter  :)
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Give them some high nitrogen feed.

Mine are still really skinny (as in les than 5mm across) but have suddenly started growing much longer leaves -- could be a sign they are going to do somehting at last.

I haven't despaired yet - they are a later variety they have lots of time to grow. Mussleburgh
