two possible scams?
« on: January 11, 2021, 14:33 »
I was looking at something (can't remember what) and a window opened on my pc to say if I clicked on the correct box and tried three times to find it I'd win a new Samsung phone for £1. Well, I clicked on once to no avail then it said I only had one more go left (?) and, guess what, I got it. Yeah, to pay £1 I'd have to give them my card details. Not likely!
The other one is a bit puzzling. My OH regularly uses a website in his Favourites but when he tried to log in as usual he was told his password had expired. Er, I didn't know they could. Being ultra-cautious in case someone was after his password I clicked on their Forgotten Password button so they could send a link and he could re-set it which he did and all is ok. What do you think?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hope you have antivirus software on your PC GG, and that it's running and up to date - unwanted pop-ups can be a sign your PC has picked up some malware from somewhere.

Not a bad idea to go belt and braces and run Malwarebytes from time to time (there is a free version you can download.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Google keep telling me that some of my passwords need re-visiting, but the sites are some very old ones I don't ever use.

I mean, what's the point of having a passpord, when all you have to do is type 'password', and you get all sorts of offers mainly from Estonia for some reason, and how do they know I'm 29 years old!!

Seriously, as the others say #1 - fake; #2 OK...

Thanks all and I agree with you. I have Norton 360 which has always served me well and has blocked quite a few things so am not worried,

I've had 2 scam emails today.  You'd think they would make the effort to spell correctly.

My email address is purposely a bit odd, so when I see the scammer starting the 'message' with the second digit, it's clearly a scam, and is easily binnable in seconds!

Gmail is pretty good at noticing spam, but some results are so funny, I even give them a donation - via Nigeria, as a goodwill gesture! The last one received a few old brass coins from some ancient Belgian currency, and sent without a stamp!

Just had an email telling me that as I missed my first covid jab I need to pay a fine of £250, it will double every week the fine remains unpaid.  Nice try.

I had the BT Openreach call (again) today.  It seemed to come from a legitmate UK landline number but I reckon that was spoofed. The very nice lady on the other end of the line said she was calling from BT Openreach and had noticed a problem with my internet - and router. She asked questions about which devices I had connected to the internet, and when I mentioned a personal laptop she asked me to start it up.

At that point I was convinced it was a scam and ended the call.  I gurgled for this sort of scam and yes, sure enough ...

They're very convincing, potentially apart from the very strong South Asian accent and incredibly loud call centre type background. Don't allow them access to your computer.  Beware!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I got one ages ago like this when a lady rang up and asked if I had a pc. When I said I do, she said there was something wrong that needed fixing and I was to switch it on. I knew it was a scam otherwise why was she asking if I had a pc in the first place?????? Der!

We have a BT phone which lets you screen everyone calling, and you press '1' if you know them or don't see some Bratislavian code displayed, otherwise they all get binned without us knowing, especially the foreign ones!

We bought it for when all the PPI scams were going on, and it was a huge success too! Funnily enough though, we did have a proper actual claim which was offered by our (then) bank by letter, and they paid up without a whimper, which was rather pleasant, as we cashed a cheque for well over £6,000, and that paid for our funerals...:0~
