Garlic scapes
« on: June 03, 2016, 10:51 »
Anyone else harvesting their garlic scapes? After reading about eating them on here last year, I noticed that mine looked about ready and cut off half of them yesterday. Sautéed in a bit of butter, they were delicious with asparagus, steak and baby potatoes (bought).

Picked first ones today from some of my red garlic. Only a few plants (of my many) had them so lots more to come.

Had the rest of mine last night and I really enjoyed them. I may well try planting a load of cloves close together in rows for next year to get a bigger crop, may even plant a whole bulb at a time and see how they do. I had loads left over this year that just ended up on the compost heap.

Anyone tried grow hard neck garlic just for the scapes?

I read that they only appear on hard necked varieties.  Have turned mine into pesto and frozen it.

I haven't got any this year yet but I usually put them in a risotto.
