Planning a couple of weeks with the family over the summer. A week camping.Another week at the Center for Alternative Technology(CAT). Find the place inspirational and at £80 ahead , for a week during the school summer holidays, seems too good to be true.
Any other cheap ideas?

So what do you get at CAT? I went there once - liked the water lift
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

One of the loveliest sites I've camped at several times now in my tent is at Batcombe Vale in Somerset - a google search brings up the web site.  Not too big, no traffic noise, stunning scenery, buzzards overhead, great but safe exploring for kids (I don't have any but the nephews were suitably impressed) with the option to do a spot of fishing if that's what you're into, a super real ale pub along the road - The Wanstrow Inn, and an organic farmshop just over the hill.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

what about a house swap? would anyone like to rough it and swap for a started-but-nowherenear-finished house in the country?, we fondly call it 'authentically rustic'
Through someone we met here, I know of a campsite only open in August I think on a farm on Dorset coastland.....Eweleaze farm I think...try a google....very basic, but looks good on the website

ouch, that is not a nice story muntjac.
My husband is a builder here, we came for the so called mortgage free life, and husband hoping to work a 3 day week, while doing up our own pad................er, ok, we are mortgage free, but the charges you have to pay (if you go legit) are so high, he can't afford to do the 3 day week...and as for our own renovations...mmmmmmmmmm.
Your story is one we hear alot unfortunately, and it is really giving Brit builders a bad name....which isn''t good when you are trying to start a business from scratch, and legitimately, and in a trade he knows.
Sorry to hear about your friends, I hope they can manage to dig their way out.

I was thinking, I have never had a holiday so would be happy if anyone in the same boat wants a week in Norfolk they can pitch their tent in my garden but don't know the legalities of it, I dont want money but would be willing to cook brecky if they brought their own bits and they could use the loo and bath for a foody donation. Where do I stand on this does anyone know or is it the worst idea I have ever had?????
