Title: The girls are here!
Post by: tosca100 on April 03, 2012, 13:06
Well, we've picked the girls up, the lady dusted them for mites etc and they have to stay in their night quarters while they are wormed, but they seem to be fairly satisfied for now and got straight down to scratching about as if they had been there all their short lives. I have taken some photos when OH put them away, but proper ones will have to wait a few days till they can roam about.

Anyway, this is Florrie, warren

Clara, black rock

And Smokey, speckledy

As predicted, Bonnie lab was interested but respectful....and Bella, well, also as predicted, not too brave! :rolf:

Couple of short vids

Nice  :D The warren and black rock do look very POL. I see its easier to get pictures with 2 pairs of hands too  :D

Smokey looks like she'll have some attitude

They look really nice  :)

Are you letting them out of the coop & run you have?

I had one like that & found for 3 hens it really was too small for them in the run.

Definitely. They will generally have the run of the drive with sand pit when I am home (finish work at 8.45am two days and 1pm three days, off two days and oh fits in somewhere!) Then the garden when we are both home so there are two of us to keep an eye on them and the dogs. The veggie patch is already netted against Bella's attentions, but when we get the lottie (end of the season) they will be having the veggie patch. We will not be leaving them out when we are not here as we are on a footpath and have a playing field behind, though no-one can climb over due to the thorny roses all over the six foot fences.

Lovely girls.  By the pictures I would say the egg is off Florrie.

You could also make your drive into a walk in run with mesh roof quite easily.  Hope that they settle in well with your dogs.   :)

They really are fine looking girlies. I hope you enjoyed your first egg. It looked quite large so hopefully you will get at least 1 per day from now on.

Lovely new additions tosca  :) The dogs will be a great asset if they will stay around and deter predators.

Brilliant to get an egg so soon and I love their little house and run. Very smart girls  :)

I thought Florrie too, but only because the lady we bought them from said she had a couple of eggs from the pol bunch and thought it was a warren who laid it!

We are going to net over the drive I think, they seem quite happy scratching about there and it will be easy to keep clean and plenty of space for a couple of sandpits. They will be allowed into the garden when OH (more nimble) is about, but don't want the dogs to....er....hoover up till they are off the wormer.

Thanks Thrift, they are pretty steady too, already love having them around. And Bella is getting braver. :D
