Growing tomatoes in a Hozelock Growbag Waterer
« on: September 09, 2019, 20:43 »
Has anyone else grown tomatoes using a Hozelock growbag waterer? I tried the waterer because it seemed it could be more reliable than the watering system I’ve used in past years.

I grew Gardeners Delight again this year. I used good quality growbags sitting on top of the Hozelock waterers. The number of tomatoes was higher than I’ve ever had before, and the tomatoes looked good, but they didn’t have the flavour of the Gardeners Delight I’ve had before. They were less firm and had less taste.

Has anyone else used these waterers for tomatoes?

I haven't but I did get some square green plastic gro-bag inserts with an inner part where you put the plant in and an outer part where you add water and I found them to be quite successful. Its base had a zig-zag cut-out which you insert into a hole cut out of the bag then you just but some compost in the base, pop the plant in then add more soil until it's full. The base of the plant is about 8" from the bag surface so it has a good depth to grow in.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I dont use them as I prefer to plant into the ground.
Regarding the taste, many people this year on our site and with patients I chat with have all mentioned the taste issue, perhaps its just the climate this year, my Heinz 1350 have not been the tastiest this year!

I have used 3 Hozelock growbag waterers for a few years now.
They were originally bought because I went away for work and could not rely on someone else to water.
I do not have the option of planting in the ground in the greenhouse.

A little story. We went out to lunch last week. Hubby ate his sandwich and salad but left two tomatoes. I said I would eat them if he didn't want them so he passed them over, saying they are not as nice as yours

So to answer your question the flavour has been good this year and always has.
A word of warning, the water lasts 3 days max in hot weather, not 2 weeks as advertised!!
