lettuce in poly tunnel?
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:36 »
I've got some lettuce in modules that are getting too big and a bit leggy.

will these be ok to plant out in the poly tunnel, it's getting pretty hot in there during the day? or will it be too hot?

I'm concerned that if i plant them out side there will be a frost and kill them all.

thanks for the help.

Lettuce are quite tough and can stand a little frost.

If you're like the rest of us, chances are you've got stacks of seedlings, so why not try both? The difference in growing conditions will stagger your crop. Harden them off before planting outside, though.

Sow some more seed straight away for a further crop.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I planted some lettuce seedlings out yesterday, May Queen. In a trough not in the soil as such.
Got through last night OK, no frost though.
They were a little flopped over this morning, which is right. Plant them deep enough to stay upright and the growth of the heart will suffer. They will straighten up in their own time.
Going to put some asparagus peas out today as well.
Next lot of lettuce will go in with the runner beans as an intermediate crop.
