Overgrown courgettes
« on: August 17, 2010, 14:22 »
A "friend" unloaded a dozen overgrown courgettes on us while we were away at the weekend. And I mean seriously overgrown - you can only them carry one at a time.

Any ideas for what to do with them?

The best suggestion I've had so far is "put them on the compost heap and grow something nice with them next year"!

You could stuff and bake them as you would marrow. We had one that got a bit big as I didn't quite catch in time so far and I sliced it and marinaded it in nice flavours, such as olive oil, garlic and lemon juice and put the slices straight on the BBQ grill at the weekend. Yum! :)

have a look at the 'courgette glut' topic.
You can still do any of those recipes with them, just probably need to skin and de seed before using ;)

Hollow a couple out and use as organic slippers,
or donate them to Highland Games organisers as green alternatives for shot-put
or put them in a freezer then take them on picnics with bottles stuffed inside each to keep white wine cool
or attempt to spark off a 'pet vegetable' craze a la pet rocks of the seventies
or sell them to an outre but slightly retro fashion designer as shoulder pads
or slice as bio-degradable frisbees
or paint them yellow, smuggle them into the zoo and laugh at the chimps disappointed faces as they bite into these 'giant bananas'
or wedge them into the oven to stop the shelves rattling due to the dodgy fan motor
or, er, do one of the other things that more senible people suggest, that'd work too....
