Are these really Tulips
« on: April 25, 2012, 11:57 »
In the picture below are some Tulip bulbs which were gifted to Mrs FB in March this year. They were purchased from a Garden Centre and arrived in branded packaging. They were planted straight away and started to grow just fine but around a month ago they stopped growing and have stayed like they are in the picture. They get some Sun during the day and have been watered when needed. My Neighbour has a lovely display of Tulips which are in full flower and they are against a North wall so get no sun at all.

We are now thinking that perhaps mine are not really Tulips & they are something like a Hoster, what do you all think? We have never grown Tulips before so we don't know.

As far as I know Hostas have fibrous roots, not bulbs.

I suspect your neighbour's tulips were planted at least as long ago as last autumn - your's probably won't flower until next year.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Agreed.

It was way to late to plant tulips to flower in spring.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Okay thanks Guys.

What should I do with them to ensure they flower next Spring.
How should I over winter them, I have a brick garage which is totally dry, should I simply place the pot in there as it is in late Autumn and bring it back out into the garden in March 2013?

They are short tulips, with bright red flowers.

They are going to flower, you can see the buds.  I've got some that look the same with red flowers just as Tosca said.

GQT did a trial some years ago about the best time to plant tulips.  They found that the bulbs planted as late as February were the ones that flowered and grew the best. ::)

Spana and Tosca are right. They are tulips because  I have the very same in my own gardens. It's a tulipa greigii here.

Those look a lot like some of my tulips as well, they seem quite hardy as they stay in the ground all year and flower but the slugs (probably) seem to love them. The leaves are always full of holes by the time I notice them coming through so that's something to watch out for.

I think quite a few people have had short tulips this year so it might just have been the hot spell in March that caused it. It seems so long ago...

They are a dwarf variety called Red Riding Hood I believe. When they have flowered nip off the faded flower head, remember to water,an occasional feed wouldn't go amiss, allow the leaves to die back & then in the autumn plant out in your borders.

Will they survive the winter in the garden border?
Or should I keep them in the garage?
Once again thanks to all.

When you plant them add some grit to the planting hole to assist drainage.

They look just like some of the tulip leaves in my garden. :) Agree they'll have been planted too late to flower this year.
