Christmas Rubbish
« on: December 21, 2010, 21:03 »
It's that time of year where we produce a lot of waste over the Christmas period! How much of it could we use on the plot or the garden rather than bin it?

well all the cardboard can go in the compost, same as fruit & veg peelings as usual, don't know about the Christmas wrapping paper (all those bright coloured inks? )The birds will eat stale bread and cake  (but should they?)

We can't use cooked food in the compost, or metallic twinkly stuff.............so don't know what you could do with that  .........used to use all the cooked food for pigs, but not any more oh no!

I separate out loads of stuff for composting and recycling so hopefully nothing much will end up in the bin. I look for gift packaging that can have another life in the greenhouse, shed or allotment. Last year a wooden wine box ended up as a shelf for my greenhouse  :)

The non-metallic wrapping paper can be recycled - apparently worms eat sticky tape according to my local composting experts!  Metallic paper is a no-no though.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Line the back of your cold frame with the shiny metalic paper, it acts like a mirror.
