How do I prune my grapevine?
« on: January 16, 2008, 21:52 »
I have a grapevine in the garden which was planted last year. As you can see it has spread out in a fan shape.

I have googled pruning but to be honest I'm more confused than when I started!!!

I think I am meant to have a central stem with side shoots coming off but I seem to have 2 main stems.

Where do I prune to and do I have to lose any of the branches?

It did attempt a small bunch of grapes last year but they fell off!!!

Any help gratefuly received. :D

You have got it planted though by the second picture, don't you?

But it all looks old wood. I don't think you want to train it upward like that any more, it is the young shoots that will fruit. Usually will be trained in horizontally.

How old is it when was that picture taken and what is your frame and space for them, any chance on variety?

I think it was 2 years old when I was given it last year. It had the two lower branches on it when it arrived and then went shooting off up the trellis!!!

My grapes are planted so that the roots can go outside to get plenty of water, but the plant itself is in the greenhouse.
My 6year old grape has three main shoots, each about 10 feet long. Each year it sprouts from the leaf nodes. I allow each new shoot to develop until a flower appears then pinch out one leaf beyond. Last year I got 6lbs of grapes.
My two year old grape was just being allowed to grow its main shoots to the required length last season. This year it may produce fruit, but I doubt it.
Regarding pruning, just cut back each current years growth to the main stem each year. Its that simple.

I think he/she needs to build a suitable framework first, which could be a multiple cordon, but those two look a bit too close to me there.

Splodger....

Well.... I've hunted high and low for the label but can't find it anywhere!!! I know it's gotta be in the house somewhere but filing ain't my strong point (as hubby will tell you from the piles of papers, post and magazine everywhere)!!

All I know is that is was about 2 years old when I was given it last year, it's a white grape and it came from QVC!!!!!

Over to you.....

The trellis forms the 'back wall' of a pergola so it would be easier to let it grow up that. There are several wooden beams that cross over the top so it has the option of going up and over them.

I can post a piccie of the whole structure in the morning if that helps you?

It would be nice to let it fruit if possible - my girls think they'll have fresh grapes on tap!!!! Hubby's getting a bucket ready to start treading grapes to make wine - LOL only kidding!

Any advice you can give is much appreciated.  :)

you won't get much in the way of fruit - but i'll have a look at your pictures tomorrow - and give you my personal thoughts on it - although i don't grow grapes myself - but i have had a bit of vineyard experience in the past - but it is a completely different discipline
