Hedge Dying? Friends Question...
« on: June 03, 2013, 20:10 »

Friend at work has asked me to ask here for help...

He has a privet hedge around his garden, but it is starting to die back in large patches.
On closer examination, he can see there has been some kind of 'miner' been through the leaves, thus killing the hedge off.

He wants to know if there is any kind of treatment / pesticide he can use against the problem?

The trouble is that the leaf miner is inside the leaves so there is very little in the way of chemical treatment that can help. Your friend could try removing the affected leaves and then burning them. If the hedge is badly infected your friend could cut it back hard as privit hedges will respond to hard pruning - they should then feed the hedge well to make it strong enough to fight off future attacks although there is no guarantee this will work as privits are very prone to leaf miner.

I told him a similar thing, chop back etc. But he thinks there is a chemical way to do it......

I'll let him know anyway.
