Haven,t seen them myself,but have been informed that recent green and healthy parsnip leaves now have a 'red' or rusty colour on them. Any ideas?

Possibly damage to the crown, either through hoeing to close or perhaps carrot fly?

Yup - sounds like carrot fly.

Parsnips do tend to survive it better than carrots do, although there will be some primary damage, and probably secondary damage from canker too. Keep them well fed to give them the best chance of growing through it.
