Stringing onions
« on: August 27, 2012, 10:28 »
Hi

My onions have dried out and can now be stored. Does stringing them up actually make them keep longer or is it just a way of saving space? I have a shelf in my larder for them. Just wondering what the actual benefits to stringing them up are?

Thanks

Roy

Space saving and it looks good.  It also allows air movement to prevent damp/mould problems, but an open net bag also does that.  Make sure you store them in the light - in the dark they will sprout more readily.

Onions need to be kept as cool as possible without freezing. Airy place is good too -- I use cardboard box trays that apples, grapes etc come in to local green grocers and I lay a single layer of onions in each and then spread the trays around the garage until fully dry and then I stack them up in the garage. I keep an eye out for frost and cover or put a little heater on. Potatoes, marrows, apples etc are in there as well.
I have used stringing and mesh bags but prefer the trays as I can select which onions to use first and spot any soft ones readily.
Either way I hope it works for you.
