Potato leaves damaged and wilted by frost
« on: May 04, 2011, 21:21 »
Hi, I wonder if anyone knows if my potatoes will still grow after the leaves have been damaged and wilted by frost.
Is there any advice anyone can give me.

They should be ok but it might set them back a little.  Have they been earthed up?

Hi... if only the tips have been caught, they should be OK..... cover them with Soil/compost they will be fine and the new leaves will push through...

Thanks for your replies. Some have been earthed up. I will cover them in soil/compost tomorrow.
It is such a relief. This is our first year of growing our own. We have moved to a new home with a big enough garden for an allotment so are pretty keen.

As stated they should readily grow new shoots with no great harm done but a bit of a set- back in harvesting time.  I have also found the use of grass clippings (provided they have not  had any damaging chemicals applied) is an easier way and supplementary way of  of 'earthing up ' helps retain the moisture and is less lightly to damage the forming potatoes. No great disaster this time!

I think just about all of the dozen or so lotty holders at our local allotments have suffered the same fate - I had earthed my earlies up about as much as I could but the leaves were getting a bit too eager - now they've all been knocked back. Hopefully won't happen again. Lost our courgette plants as well - only been in a few days but guess we were chancing our luck a bit with them

visited my plot after work today to find the same! All the showing bits of potatos are all black and crispy

Luckily most had been earted up a couple of days earlier so was only a day or so's growth that was affected..

My mums dwarf beans look pretty dead though.. I told her i thought it was a little early
