Hi every one. Not been on here for a while as hubby's not been well
Anyway my question is can chickens eat fat? I often soak any left over homemade bread in lard and put it out for the wild birds, they love it!
 Well yesterday i took a piece out on a plate,on which i'd left it to set. i always let my Gal's out while i'm in the garden and i was filling the wild bird feeders and had left the plate on the ground. i heard the sound of  pecking behind me and found 4 chickens eating the lard from the plate. i took it away from them because i didn't know if it would hurt them. They were not happy! thank you

sorry but they really shouldn't eat it - it contains nothing of value for them. Wild birds are ok with it as they burn a lot more calories off flying around to get food (plus flying probably uses a lot more energy than just walking over to a feeder like your chickens do).

Yes they can, should they?  Probably not.

It very unlikely that you've just killed them, but I wouldnt make a habit of it.

Thank you for the advice! And hubby's not to bad, he has MS so it's up and down, but the chickens give him a real boost!!
