When reading most gardening books they give details of when to plant as "Early spring, mid spring or late spring. Likewise I bought a book today and it carried on in the same way with early, mid and late summer etc. Can anybody actually give me some more detail as to more precise dates.I know its not a precise science but Id like more of a guide to work with .Thanks.

It's a minefield regarding Spring and planting guides.

I don't think there's a definitive date.

Let's face it mid summers day is apparently June 21st. :shock:

I personally class Spring as March,April,May.so you can have early mid and late .

And Summer as June,July and August.

That's how I work it out.

I just depends on the weather in any particular year and where you are in the country.  

Spring is earlier for us soft southerners then it is for the rough tough Yorkshire folk

Thanks compostqueen - that is a useful guide.

Growing is an art - as DD says, the weather being the big thing. Some plants, like onions react to daylength so further complicating things. In fact, the more you think about it, it's a wonder we grow anything!

My best tip is to ask other growers locally what they're doing. I say locally because there's a huge difference between Devon and Inverness.

Whereas someone I know in LA says they just chuck toms seeds in the ground any time of the year and they grow like weeds!!!! damn the uk weather
