From one puzzle to another
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:14 »
I posted on here a while ago that after losing one of my blue egg laying hens, (now down to 2), I was puzzled because after several weeks of just 2, I was suddenly getting 3 blue eggs a day again. This started a few weeks ago and has continued most days, if it was just an occasional thing I wouldn't be so puzzled but it's almost everyday. Yesterday I actually saw one of my speckaldies who used to lay beautiful brown eggs, lay a blue one! What on earth is going on, and how is this possible?

my speckeldy eggs are now white, due to her age as she no longer makes a proper shell.how old are yours? colour is added last of all to the shell in most birds.

She was pol last August and started laying fairly dark brown eggs around the beginning of October last year. The eggs she's laying now are definitely blue not white, I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself, and she's not a hybrid. I've not changed their feed or added anything to their diet that could account for the change. I seem to have swapped one puzzle for another.

?both hens. I have 12 altogether. I was doing an egg collection the other day when she came into the coop. she waited til I had finished then settled down, so I kept the lid open and watched her. A couple of minutes later she got up and wandered out and there was a beautiful blue egg, still wet from being laid.  The Speckaldy in the middle is the one who is now laying blue eggs, and the black hen behind her is one of my original blue egg layers. I haven't been able to capture the true colour of the egg it's a lovely pale blue.
