Reverse thinning out for carrots
« on: June 02, 2023, 18:38 »
I was reading about removing the largest carrots when thinning out so you can eat them as baby ones and leave the smaller ones to continue growing to a good size. More harvests in fact.
Has anyone ever tried this? Fors and against?

I've always followed this rule Anton to the extent of letting them get a smidge 'entwined'.   Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I never thin my carrot seedlings.  Carrot root fly is a permanent pest on my plot and I have to cover them with enviromesh.
I find thinning makes things worse as the fly is attracted to the smell.
Lack of thinning doesn't seem to affect the size of the final crop. They seem to push each other out of the way.  I still get decent sized carrots.

Yes I’ve done this, but like Mum, where I am now I have to keep them netted with enviromesh to keep the dragged carrot fly away so I tend to harvest in bunches these days

All the same, as said. I never thin. Or thin the other way, pulling the big guys out, I do this with with all roots, not just carrots.
