The purple ones you see abroad are usually the bush variety, so don't die back to the ground in winter; the deep roots are very useful for stabilising banks - that one also comes in yellow, and occasionally you see the cross with yellow/purple bicoloured flowers.

They are pretty when you see loads at once though  :)
