Sloe gin in plastic bottles?
« on: September 16, 2011, 20:14 »
Can anyone tell me if it would be OK to put my sloe gin in a washed plastic milk bottle - to make it easier to shake about and then get the sloes out?
Thanks

I have used plastic alcohol bottle many times but never tried milk bottles, the caps are a bit iffy.
Don`t overdo it with the `shaking about' upside down and back twice is fine. If you shake it and bash the sloes about you will end up with bitty gin which you will have to filter and lose the precious (thinking like gollum) liquid. :)

I have found large coffee jars to be very useful fro sloe gin etc. Plenty of swooshing space  :nowink:

Well, I've got a large GLASS sweety jar must be worth its weight in gold by now.  I did have two but I tried washing one in too hotter water      Cheers,     Tony.

Thanks for the welcome - and the advice.  I must confess it did hurt to waste all that 'precious' through muslin last year!!  I'll be less vigourous this time and won't waste any at all.

We use those bottles for wine etc. it is after all, food quality plastic!

Years ago, we used to make wine in what were called ex-wine fives. They were the five gal plastic containers, which fitted inside a cardboard box, and were used by off-licences back then (70s), to sell draught wine.

These were the same plastic as the milk bottles, and they lasted for ages, as long as they were sterilised each time, and scrubbed!

I prefer milk bottles to the big pop bottles, as they stand up better!
