Watermelon variety will need to selected carefully for your area, if you are in the UK.  Look at days to maturity.  There are some types adapted to short growing seasons (70 days, these will mostly be smaller melons) but many require 90 days or longer.  They need full sun, and space to grow.  Plant in a "hill" with well-rotted manure, supplement during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer feed (a water-soluble fertilizer, though if you want to try nettle tea or something else, why not!  ).

A trick with harvesting watermelon.  Look at the vine tendrils growing close to the fruit, if the tendrils are browning, most likely the melon is ready (most reliable method IMO).  I forgot another good one, added with this edit. Check the field spot (pale patch on the side of the melon that's on the ground). It should be yellow, not white. Some people gently tap (or slap) the melon, if reverberates a little bit, it is ready.  Finally, there is the broom straw method; balance a straight piece of straw from a broom on the melon, if it turns, the melon is ripe (least reliable, IMO; obviously won't work if it is windy outdoors).
