Fly control around chickens
« on: July 05, 2010, 12:44 »
Please, can anyone help?  I recently saw a product for fly control, but cannot find the thing to order some.

It is (I think) a box which one puts far away from houses and chickens and the flies are attracted away to it.

Please will some one tell me I haven't dreamed it up!?

Many thanks,

We have a problem with flies here in Greece at certain times of the year and i've used the red top flycatcher before with reasonable results but this year someone told us to try a selfsealing poly bag (the type you put your sandwiches in) and third fill it with water then put 3 or 4 small shiny coins into the bag with the water, close then hang up a couple of these spaced out in the run.  For some bizarre reason it seems to work and it's much cheaper! I have a beck at the side of my house plus loads and loads of trees and farmland so we always have millions of flies (even before we had chickens). Every year it was murder as we leave the back door open for the dogs to go in and out so nothing to stop the flies coming in - the trouble is once in they never seem to fly out again. Well this year me and grannie Annie bought 10 red tops between us off ebay (far cheaper to buy in 10's), I had 6 and Annie had the rest. I have hung 3 out in my garden and they took a couple of weeks to get going but now they are working wonders. I have only seen a couple of flies in the house. The red tops are supposed to last 2 or 3 months so are well worth getting  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

Many thanks for the replies.  I had seen praise for the Red Top, but lost the link before remembering the name of the stuff..... the little grey cells are not what they were!
Have also tried the sealed bag method by the back door with some success.

Re Flies coming in thro open doors. You could try the chain link door curtains. I know a couple of farmers who use them and swear by them. Apparently there are lots of different designs that you can get.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I used red tops last year, and they were very effective, but absolutely horrible to deal with and dispose of when full of flies.  Eeeeek! :tongue2:  And the most disgusting things to see hanging in your garden, but they do need to be hung in sunlight to be effective.

Haven't needed them this year, but have some put by in case.
