Asparagus crop delayed?
« on: May 04, 2021, 13:51 »
Hi all I normally have a decent crop of asparagus by now. One of my fellow plot holders has fleeced his crop. I just wonder how others are getting on with this odd season?
Cheers HH
Keep digging

Ours is late too, normally getting into full swing by now but so far only had a couple of pickings.

Same here, managed a single picking so far, but a lot of stems are suffering frost damage. Just about to nip up and see if there’s any ready as another frost tonight. I suspect it will go crazy when it warms up a bit and I’ll have it coming out of my ears

Thanks that’s reassuring.
I have just picked one whole spear!
Will add it tonight’s stir fry for extra flavour if nothing else.
Cheers HH

Mine has only just started.  I had tips of spears showing weeks ago, but they decided to stay put for a while.  Can't say I blame them.

There are a few spears ready today which I will pick later, so that is hopefully the start of cropping.

I suspect it will go crazy when it warms up a bit and I’ll have it coming out of my ears

That is what I am hoping for too.  No such thing as too much home-grown asparagus  :D

I’ve had to harvests so far but they are heavily mulched, it’s my first real year of harvesting them. I did pick about 12 spears last year from 18 crowns as the instructions that came with them said I could but as they seemed quite spindly growth I left them, exerting great will power lol I’m hoping it paid off, but some are still not showing at all so I’m not sure if they survived.

It's really slow here. In the past I'd be picking mid April but moved plot and have a new bed in what should be first year of cropping. Cut a small bunch on Friday but nothing big enough today and a few frosted tips at soil level. Just too dry and cold. Nothing will move much until we get some warmer nights I think...
