Supporting Calabrese
« on: May 02, 2009, 10:54 »
Do I need to???

Have been up garden to inspect plot, as we had a bit of badger damage last night.  Fortunately everything ok, but broccoli was leaning over a bit.  All plants are about 30 cm tall with one leaf stem larger than all the rest, and I think this is what is bringing it down.

Any help would be most greatfully received  :)
I have a pair of secateurs and I'm not afraid to use them!!

Normally I wouldn't bother supporting any brassicas but sometimes nature throws us a curve and we have to adapt. By all means, support the problem plants to ensure they'll keep growing straighter and not over other plants later. My asparagus plants do that and its annoying to have them flopped over the next crop so they now have a containing fence which has worked out well.

Definitely firm the soil down round the roots (brassicas in general get upset - and die - if the roots have got loose)  It might just solve the problem, but by all means stake them with canes if you have to
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
