Bald neck Silkie
« on: June 25, 2013, 13:21 »
Does such a thing exist??

We brought a 3 month old chick whose neck feathers were missing, the breeder said she was born like that. Looking at the local selling site they have several ornamental birds called naked neck, do you think these are silkies??

The reason Im asking is she is now sitting on a clutch of eggs and wondered if we would have any chicks like her?

The breeder raised them in an incubator so I don't think its a mixed race silkie

Thanks

can you post a photo of her - this would help identify her. Also what are the rest of her feathers like - are they fluffy like a silkie or do they look like normal feathers? What colour is her skin and ear lobes?
Transylvanian Naked Necks are very popular in France as they are a dual purpose breed and good for eating.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Shes sitting at the mo Joyfull so I will try to get a photo, her skin, feet and beak are black, she has white fluffy type feathers like a silkie with the funky hair do! The birds im referring to are called cou nu on leboncoin and are under ornamental poule but there never is a photo! Its only the back of her neck which is bald, I thought at first she had been pecked but we have had her for around 6 months and she isn't the lower in the pack anymore??

Thanks

She may possibly re-feather at her moult. She does sound like a Silkie. :)

If she has been feather pecked when her new feathers were coming through she will be bald until her next molt as Sassy says.  I had a Black Rock with a baldy bottom for nearly a year.     I'm pleased to say she is fully clothed at the moment.

Sometimes they only do a partial molt and you start noticing a change in the feather colouring (nice new fresh feathers).  They can molt at any time of the year.   ;)

Hubby doesn't want me to disturb her photos whilst shes sitting pretty, shes got about another week to go, so I will post some then!

Finally after a year or so using the broody coop for what it was intended for!
So hopefully photos should be easy!

thanks

She will probably feather up after brooding, you can help by giving her food with more protein in now as they do lose condition whilst brooding.   ;)
