Title: Medlar recipes
Post by: FN on September 26, 2010, 15:09
Does anyone have any good / unusual recipes for medlars?
I have made tonnes of chutney and don't really like the jam / jelly (tried it last year).
I don't want to waste the huge amount of fruit my friend usually gives me every November.

Probably a silly question but did you make sure they were suitably aged (bletted I believe is the technical term) before you used them for the jam/jelly?

Yes I did. I just find the jam & jelly too sweet. Was thinking wine or maybe gin would work?

I'm sure that I've come across a Medlar liqueur recipe somewhere and also a medlar tart (where you mix in sugar and an egg and bake it in a pastry case. Try Googling them.

Dont think I've ever seen a medlar in the flesh ::) What sort of taste is it, if you can describe it :)

How about experimenting and using a pumpkin pie recipe but substituting the pumpkin for medlar, or perhaps a medlar meringue pie?  Make a base, layer with mashed medlar and add a meringue top and bake.  Also, how about if you followed a mango chutney recipe but used medlar instead?  They're quite similar in texture.

Thanks for the suggestions, will try medlar liquer & pie.
I think it tastes a bit like pear as it is starting to go brown / soft but also a bit like caramel.

It's something I've never tried but sounds delicious.  I'm now looking at ordering a medlar tree for the garden!  I think a tart served with some creme fraiche sounds a really good option, preferably with medlar liquer to wash it down.
