whats happened to my cucumber plant ? it looked ok but when i touched it
it came apart about an inch above the soil

Sounds like stem rot.

Have you been watering the compost from the top?

Note to me: (growing cucumbers in my parents greenhouse)

Write a big note and stick it on the cucumbers: "Mother, please do not water the cucumbers from the top - if they must swim pour the water in the flower-pot saucer!"
