How to gutter a shed with sticky-out eaves?
« on: February 17, 2010, 20:13 »
My allotment shed has 3" eaves. I want to gutter it for my water butts. I went to buy the guttering but the brackets need to be 3" longer to fix to the shed walls, otherwise they won't reach the edge of the roof. Is it possible to buy brackets that hold the gutter 3" away from the walls?

The normal overhang on the eaves is 2" so you are only 1" extra and a short piece of batten behind each bracket will do the trick as New 2 veg said.

I'm not so handy with a saw so I was hoping someone had invented a nice extendable bracket :(

You can get a galvanised rafter bracket that the normal clip bolts onto but only if the roof boarding is thick enough (at least 3/4") to get a good fixing.

Bits of batten as spacer will be easiest even if you get someone ( the nice man on the next plot) else to do the cutting.
1" lengths of plastic or copper tube will do if you know a tame plumber.

Or you could think that if you have to learn to use a saw, learning on bits of batten on the side of your shed is a pretty good way.  If they are a bit wonky as you practice, hey, who cares!   :D  (next you will be building munti-frames for the beans and bespoke compost bins!   ;) )

If a 2" x 1" or say 3" x 2" batton , doesn't give you enough spacing for your needs, cut lenght of plastic or even copper pipe to required lenghts and use screws to compensate for the lenght required. Bracket-pipe and screw through both....screw direct to shed...

a new plot holder was working on his shed the other day and i saw what he was doing and thought of you,

he was using shelf brackets and cable tied the gutter down to them where they wanted it.

was a 8-10" bracket
