Is it all that important? When I do my final potting up, the compost is augmented with a hefty dollop of well rotted bullock wotsit, a sprinkle of fish, blood, and bone. Good bit of nutrient there and should last a good while. If you feed as stated on tom food container, could it lead to a bit of overfeeding and make foliage rather than tasty tommies?

yes there's a good bit there, but, in a pot, they will eventually run out.

Keep an eye on them and feed when necessary

as I understand it, tomato food is high in potash so doesn't stimulate leaves much but does feed the fruit and flowers...

Mine are all grown in flower buckets and I add comfrey tea to the water once per week.

I'm trying the Levington slow release thingy wotsits this year. I shall probably give a little bit of liquid feed every so often as well.
