Puff progress & frustration
« on: January 06, 2007, 12:31 »
Hi folks   :D

The digging is done: horse manure liberally spread, seeds are here, the compost bin is built and warming up it's first load, fruit bushes have been obtained, posts and wires erected for the blackberries/raspberries, windbreak put up for them too, tools sharpened, the bunker is half built, collection of more manure in sacks by car is ongoing and I've even made some 'duvets' for the compost out of bubblewrap/styrofoam packing peanuts....  and now the rain has set in, 3 days solid so far...

When, oh when is it gonna stop?  :(

The ground isn't waterlogged, but it sure is seriously wet.  I've got a feeling I shouldn't put those fruit bushes (blackcurrents/gooseberries/black/raspberries) in yet.  I did wonder if digging a much bigger hole and putting them in a mix of loamy compost with a bit of grit/sand might give them a better chance  :?:

Should I wait until this darn deluge stops?   or should I risk it ?

All we have left to do is get that bramble hedge down to the level of the posts to let more light in, it's not a joyful task either - thorny stems as thick as your thumbs, long handled loppers, shears, gloves and swearing in the absence of a petrol trimmer are our tools.

We finally met the chap who has the plot next to us, what a friendly old fella he is too, really welcoming  :)

PS: Belated Birthday Greetings to Muntjac  :)

Cheers Muntjac, think I'll leave them in the containers in the back garden, until the sun comes out.

Ach, so hedge cutting it is then

We're in a planning frenzy here, about where to sow and plant - it keeps changing as we learn more.  Also discovered which bed the previous plot holder used for root veg - whilst digging, I found millions of long parsnip tails in the soil. So at least we know where not to plant roots in the coming season - phew.

John, I'll borrow those plans after you please,  has anyone built an ark out of pallets before?   :tongue2:

With or without oars?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

It's rare that it's perfect, but there is a happy medium!

Only three days?  Count yourself lucky - I don't think we've had three dry days in the last six weeks!!!!!
