Cardboard and spuds
« on: March 07, 2013, 19:15 »
I've been offered some cardboard which I intent to use as a weed membrane between potato rows. I don't have the time to dig the spud patch so am just going to plant deep rake and hoe off the worst of the couch grass and dig out the odd nettle.

I need to weigh the cardboard down and don't want to spend a fortune on compost and am not allowed to use horse manure. Any suggestions tips?

Make sure the soil underneath the cardboard is damp and then water the cardboard after you've laid it, so it lays flat.
Just use some clods of earth, or stones on top of the cardboard to weight it down. I've also used plastic bottles with water in as weights for netting and mulch.

But mum I couldn't possibly wish for rain!

hmm I do have a few bricks so could use these in places and could poke the cardboard ends under turf

durin very dry spells is there a chance the wind could lift the cardboard and cause havock?
