:? Hi to all. This is my first post. Question is , Suttons have just delivered my seed potatoes, First earlies which are Lady Christl and maincrop of Isle of jura. How do I store these tubers until I am ready to start the chitting process?. Can anyone help.

Against all common advice I had best results of chitting, leaving them alone in the cardboard boxes they came, on the floor of the garage, when I had a busy end of year. I keep doing just that ever since.

Has anyone else tried keeping them in the dark right up to planting time?

You end up with long spidery shoots up to a foot long, which must be handled carefully to avoid snapping them off (Toughen them up a little by putting them in the light for a week or two before planting out). I should have also said to rub out all but 3 or 4 shoots.

A heavier crop with more tubers is the usual result. Have a go with a few tubers as an experiment and you may just be pleasantly surprised!

Seems awful early to be receiving seed potatoes,however i use egg boxes or plant module trays,placing 1 potato in each section or module.Personally i never place them in the dark.

I'd keep them in the fridge.
