I decided to be organised and get some red mite powder, my hens don't have red mite, but as my mother always says "prevention is better than cure". After googling many variations of "red mite Southampton" I found only one pet shop that sells it. I went there today and was told on no uncertain terms that just because their website says they sell it doesn't mean its in all their stores,  they only sell chicken food and I should have checked first!
Feeling a bit disgruntled as the website did say they sold it in stores, but didn't specify which ones, I went to a few other places, and haven't been able to get it anywhere!
 Is it made in some parallel universe so you can only order it online? I cannot order online as I don't have a credit card and can't always wait in for deliveries.
They do sell it at our local farm shop but only in bulk - I don't need loads of it and presently have nowhere to store it - I have 5 bags of cement stored in my kitchen at the mo!
Sorry to rant, I know advertising is not allowed on this site, but am really struggling, can anyone advise me?

The best place I found for wood shavings (for nest box) was a pet shop down Shirley High Street. It was a huge bag and will last ages for around a tenner. It's next to the post office and it's about the size of a bale of straw.

I've had a google, These people do poultry shield as well as Diatom  Are they near to you?

Chickens are a good price too!

Grannie, thats where I got my ladies from! its only about 10 miles away, so not too bad! I swear it wasn't on their website when I looked myself yesterday!!!

lol, how strange is that???  Are they nice girls?  Would you recommend them?  It's nice to know where there are good breeders and rearers.

The girls themselves are friendly, and I got 3 eggs today!! I was pleased as I had started to wonder if I was doing something wrong!
When we collected them she asked if we would like their wings clipped and did them there and then.  They are vaccinated and so far don't seem have to have any health problems (touch wood). They did say they only sell to knowledgeable homes, yet asked us no questions whatsoever - maybe we looked experienced!

Sometimes you can tell if people are responsible or not, but I suppose their main aim is to sell their chickens, but if they are vaccinated, at least they have a decent start.

I hope they do well for you Raven!

Not sure if we looked responsible as my step daughter wandered over to the cow shed saying "can we get 4 cows instead?" when we went to get them.
Had another 2 eggs so far this morning so really pleased, and they have spent a few hours happily "helping me" dig in the garden!
