Title: dahlias in tubs
Post by: rowlandwells on February 01, 2019, 10:40
I was reading Sarah ravens catalogue yesterday looking at dahlias  she suggested potting on the dahlias I presume the tubers in plastic pots and sink them in the ground making it better to lift the pots out the ground in autumn for storage

I thought that was a good idea because we do the same in our tubs planting up the tubers in plastic pots  then put the plastic pots in the terracotta tubs removing them into the greenhouse in the autumn then replace the pots back in spring so we could do the same with the ones we plant in the allotments

and talking about plastic pots I use old 25ltr drums [not oil drums]  I cut them to the size I need wash them out so there clean not to contaminate the plants put a couple of drain holes in the bottom and place them in our pots I've found if you get a good drum the plastic is tougher than the plastic pots we bought the plastic I cut of I take to the recycle centre

It is a good idea, although replacing the soil in the pot every year is helpful, plus the tubers can get very large so splitting them up is needed sometimes too

I wonder whether a plastic pot is better than a terracotta pot.  There's the risk that the tubers could get waterlogged, perhaps, in plastic??
