Potting out new tomatoes?
« on: February 22, 2012, 17:27 »
Hi all, I planted some tomato and chilli seed 12 days ago and the tomatoes are growing well, the chilli seeds have not yet come through.  With regards to the tomatoes when can these be potted into larger pots in the greenhouse?  Or is this not a straight forward question?  They are about 1.5 inches in height.

What size pots are they in now? They're ready when you see the first roots appear at the bottom. Always move up 1 pot size at a time, and when you're reasy for the final post they can go in at the bottom of the pot and have compost up the stem...

They probably won't be able to go into a cold greenhouse until the end of April/beginning of May.
Even then you'd need to fleece them if we get warning of a late frost.

Where are they now, and dare I ask about aluminium foil?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Have just potted some of mine up. Were started in modules and are about 3 inches tall now. I always plant them up as deeply as possible ( with the seed leaves just above the surface) The slower you can get them to grow the better IMO at the moment. Keeping them on a windowsill above a radiator will just give them ideal conditions to get drawn and spindly. Mine will be going into the lightly heated part of the greenhouse at about 12 degrees.
DD What tin foil??? :)

Or a hat (sorry DD - would have seemed a bit random if we didn't know what you were talking about)!  :D

No, it's for a hat.

There's a lot of aliens walking amongst us and it keeps their thought waves out.

Yes - is for a reflector.

Place your plants between it and the light source and you'll about double the amount of light. No more leggy plants or bending towards the sun.

Some go to the bother of lining a box, but I just tuck it under the seed tray and bend it upwards. A quick nip in the right place and it'll stand up by itself.

No I've not used aluminium at all.  I think i've got too may in each cubicle.  I bought one of those propagator trays from wilkos, and I've got up to four seeds growing in each 1.5 inch spare section.  Should I thin these out now??

At the moment I move them in front of the dining room window but was hoping to get them shifted sooner than April.  I even seatched the internet for information on this.  Looks like i've not done enough research!

Your seeds may already have gone too leggy to handle without damaging them, but try this.

Get them out of the propagator. The lid should come off as soon as the seed germinate.

Transplant them into individual pots and bury them as deep as possible - even right up to the leaves.

Get them into a light place like a window sill and deploy the foil!

Keep fingers crossed, but be prepared for the fact that you may have to re-sow.

The plants I have on the go at the moment are destined for a heated greenhouse. The one for the unheated greenhouse are still snug in their packet and will remain so for another 3-4 weeks at least.

I'm glad you've said that - all this talk of potting on made me think I'm lagging behind!

Mine are still in the Jacob's Cracker tin with almost everything else.

My onions are coming through quite well though :) Incidentally I have a few questions about them so I'm off to find an onion-y topic...

I sowed Toms about 2 weeks ago. They were on my spare room window ledge but are now on the bathroom window ledge with lids well off. I have 1 inch stems that have 2 leaves per stem. Is it ok for me to re pot as they are still in propogator trays(lids well off) and can I plant up to the first leaves
