Title: Preparing wooden coop for broody bantam
Post by: bantam novice on March 13, 2011, 10:26
Hello there,

I have decided that I would like to try hatching some chicks under a broody bantam (when one of mine decides to go broody) and want to prepare a separate chicken house and run for them.  I have one that has been out all winter and the wood needs treating with something.

I intend to wash it down with poultry guard

I was thinking of sanding it down and painting with Sadolin or something similar.  Is there a wood preserver or treatment that people here would recommend?

I was also wondering if I needed to paint on diatom slurry before other treatments so that the little red critters get their comeuppance or is it better to paint on afterwards?

I have some Johnsons anti-mite that I intend to spray on broody bantam.

sorry about the question bombardment and thanks in advance  :)

treat with a preserver that says it is bat friendly - it will then be poultry friendly (if in doubt then email/telephone the manufacturers). Next treat with poultry shield then make a diatom slurry and paste inside. Then you just have to hope your bantam goes broody (not all do). What will you do with the cockerels?

Thanks Joyfull  :)

Good to get the right sequence.

I have a friend who keeps poultry nearby (40 mins drive) who is prepared to look after or dispatch any cockrels for me.  He also gives me fertile eggs to hatch.  He has a large free-range flock himself so has all the right equipment.

I have a bantam that was going broody all the time last year and all of mine went broody at one point or another.  I know what you mean, though.  The moment you actually think you want  one to go broody none of them will  ::).

Still best to get everything ready just in case!

looks like you have everything sorted out and at least you have thought about the resulting cockerels.
I said I didn't want to hatch any this year but have been smitten by the thought of getting blue and black cochins so am fighting the urge to get some hatching eggs - I was fine about it but then Grannie Annie gave me back my broody coop, oh dear what is a girl to do?

Oh how tempting  :)

I looked at pictures and they look absolutely gorgeous.  It may be a case of being able to resist everything except temptation!  If you do get them I'd love to see pics.
