The Wilkinsons near me are selling Senshu £2 a bag of about 50. so I assume that these are what you purchased Janet. Don't think it said much on the bag, I read it on the shelf.

does anyone start them off in paper pots ??? just wondering

Mel

Don't see the point with over winter ones. You put them in the ground, they make a few roots and a bit of a shoot and that's it. No point geting them off to a flyer like spring planted ones.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for this post.
I didn't know you could plant onion sets now, will have to have a go at that.  Can you get sturon for planting now.

Where over wintering is mentioned in this thread are people reffering to growing over winter and not storing over winter.  Probably the obvious answer is yes. LOL

Sturon are not a winter onion.

These are the ones I've got - there are others.

Silver Moon
Electric
Radar
Shakespeare
Senshyu

As yes - we do mean over winter growing, not storing. These will be mature around June time, but you can harvest as needed before that. They are a good filler between your last year's stored onions running out & this one's being ready.

In general they don't store so well.

Sorry guys, I missed the responses to this after yesterday!

DD, thanks for the heads up on that nursery, by the way, they were really helpful and very keen to please and, considering the postage cost I am very happy with the price.

Looking forward to having domething in the ground while the rest of the plot is barren!  :D

Hi Scabs, sorry if I confused the issue,no- the other three varieties are not for over wintering(just thought I'd mention some successful types for next year).
Another good tip I have tried is to trim the dried top bit off the set to stop the birds pulling them out.

I planted some sets late last Autumn.  Jap onions, a couple of different onions sets, some Shallots, and a couple of Garlic types.

The Garlic and Jap Onions did fine, the Shallot and Onion sets did nothing.

I was going to sow Onions from seed this year, but never done that before.

Should I be doing something different?
