Could anyone plese tell me how to treat scale insect on one of my blackcurrant bushes? Someone has suggested wiping with meths will kill them.  Is this safe? Many thanks.

Surgical spirit and cotton buds. Dip the buds in the spirit and wipe over the pests: you can then wipe off the scales, and the results are excellent. But it does mean every leaf - time and patience!

Or remove and destroy, burn, the affected plant.  Treat the branches of the ones next to it as above, simpler to do. Then buy a new "Scale resistant" plant.  Newer versions are bred to resist this.

Once you think you have finished the treatment, Primrose, juts keep a careful eye on your precious bush to rub off any that re-appear.

You can just do this with your fingers if it doesn't gross you out.
