Hi all - I have a new allotment and whilst digging up the new raised beds I've put in there was lots of short woody roots. They looked dead but snapped to reveal what looked like a living inside. Any ideas what they are ? I removed as much as I could to the burner - any help appreciated.

Could well be old bramble roots, from plants which were chopped down to ground level. They'll probably show above ground very soon.

Nettle roots can also look woody if they are mature enough (unfortunately I know this from experience!)

How thick were they?
