Tomato Plant Spacing...?
« on: April 28, 2013, 21:12 »

Last year in our poly and greenhouse, we gave the plants generous space between each plant, nearly two feet! Bit of a waste I think now....

This year, after seeing photos of how close others put theirs, I was thinking of doing the same.

But just how close can you go before any problems begin?

I always grow mine at two feet and they seem to use it. I think if you crowd them you may have problems with the air not being able to circulate around them. It also seems to slow down the ripening a bit.

My gardening app which I am finding invaluable for spacing/working out numbers etc says 50 cm apart which is just under 2ft...

Two open bottomed 12" pots set  into a growbag. Small pot inset between the two big pots to water the growbag through.

When I had a greenhouse that got the sun all day ( 15 years ago) I could get 6 plants down one side, that's 16" spacing, without any problems - other than having far more tomatoes than I could eat.

Now the same  greenhouse is in shade for half the day, its dark, damp and cold and 2 foot spacing doesn't seem far enough apart.

I just have to persuade or bribe two neighbors to cut down their trees. One has been quoted £500 to cut down his tree, and I know he cant afford it. Nor can I for that matter.

Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

In my 6 x 8 I have 5 toms down each side, in the border, and then 2 in pots in the gap between the 2 borders at the end. Peppers/chillis in pots stand in front of the tomatoes - usually just on 1 side, or I can't get in there

Maximum 3 plants to a grow bag - a good deep one like a Tomorite one. I use growpots too - to increase the depth ;)
