Compost and Worms
« on: August 02, 2010, 17:24 »
My compost bins are getting a bit out of control as I've not mixed them up for months.  They are both almost full and I've just been putting lots of greens on, so yesterday I piled on a huge load of shredded paper, ready to mix in (still not done it).  I've just opened them up and a city full of worms have come to the top, I've never seen so many.  Is it cos they can't breath in my solid mass of greens?

It does show your compost is not hot enough (should be baking in the summer and too hot for worms!)
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Finding a mass of worms on top of the compost is perfectly normal , a bit like sleeping on top of the duvet in hot weather. :)

A big bonus for anglers trying to fill the bait box quickly , two handfulls job done. :)
