Dwarf Apple Tree
« on: October 24, 2006, 17:47 »
I want to grow a dwarf apple tree on a frame fixed to the side of my shed which is 7ft wide by 6ft high. I've made the frame and fixed it and now want to buy a tree. Shouls I go for a tree that's already fan trained or would it be best to try and get a single stem one and train it myself. Also is it the correct time to plant a bare root one or should I go for the more expensive option and buy one in a pot. I've never grown an apple before so any advice would be welcome.
I live in Cumbria and the winters can be quite hard sometimes, but we have got the lakes on the doorstep, thanks in anticipation. :?:

if you can put it south facing .i would buy a clean rooted one and train it myself as i have done with my pears .i prefer the cordon for them but its pure choice and £ available .as for which tree i should consult a local tree supplier and seek thier advice as to the right choice for your locality

Bare rooted and train it yourself.  Far more fun!  And TBH a bare rooted one year old whip will catch up with a bigger - and much more expensive - tree in no time at all.
