Is anyone's Asparagus through.
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:23 »
Hi All,
My post is as the topic, is anyone's Asparagus through yet?
Mine didn't look too healthy last year and has not shown so far. But I am wondering if this is just the colder spring we have had.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

My asparagus is not showing yet either and it looked healthy last year so I assume it is the cold spring we had so far which delayed it.

No sign of mine yet. This is their second year, i planted new crowns at the beginning of last year. I had 21 out of 24 produce ferns so I don't believe they're all dead, just sulking due to the cold. My gooseberry and currant bushes are only just starting to show green too.

Nothing showing in North London either. This will be its 4th year so should have loads.

Supposed to get some more rain tomorrow followed by some nice sunshine so that should spur it into life.

Manchester at the moment is an asparagus free zone. Planted mine last year - no show so far this year

Nope. Even a plot neighbours really well established bed isn't showing any signs of stalks.

Definately too early. Mid-May to the end of june is the season from memory?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Is it wrong that I can see spear heads poking through the ground now then?

I was worried I'd killed the inherited bed off, but evidently not.  There were loads of weeds growing around my (well my as in inherited) bed, and after discussing with a few other plot holders as well as on these forums I sprayed that section of my plot. Several weeks later I can see patches of ground, yellow weeds, and a few asparagus tips, but you need to look really carefully for them to see them.

They may come through now, I doubt they'll be growing very fast though, but you never know.

They could be planted quite shallow, and this could lead to showing a part thats normally underground?

But that would be a guess.

The last 3 years they have appeared between 15th and the 21st of April but no sign yet this year. Not worried as the ground is still a bit cold hear in Rugby.
