Title: Tony from Sheffield and his USA flypast.
Post by: Goosegirl on January 22, 2019, 12:49
Having seen the first interview with him on BBC Breakfast I was pretty sure he'd get his wishes for this flypast over the American pilots' memorial which he tends daily, and also his flagpole and the repair of the steps leading to it. What a lovely and honourable man! Not a dry eye to be seen anywhere.

He's the type of person who puts the GREAT in Britain.

His story was broken a few weeks ago on Countryfile I believe. It’s heartwarming to think that someone has granted his wish.

We bumped into him completely by chance a few weeks ago while strolling through Endcliffe Park (before his story broke.)

His story is very poignant, because he says he saw the pilot waving to him and his pals as they played on the flat grassy area, and thought he was just being friendly. when of course he was actually desperately trying to get them to move so they could attempt their emergency landing there.
You can only imagine how Tony has felt about this for the last 75 years.

He tends to the memorial 3 times a week, rain or shine; the nearby park cafe keeps him supplied with free sandwiches and hot drinks, and of course he has made many friends during his incredible commitment.

He says his son has promised to continue the maintenance of the memorial...

Tony Is top guy. He is a non-playing member of our bowls club and a really nice fellow to chat to. We have even moved the date of our AGM so that some of us can join him on the day.
Good on ya, Tony.

I only managed to tune in just before the flypast but hope it will be on the iplayer later. What a wonderful day for Tony & his ‘family’. The BBC did him proud.

Tell me why men like that are not given knighthoods and sit in the House of Lords to have their say over how to live in Britain 🇬🇧
