Too many tomatoes?
« on: June 30, 2012, 09:21 »
Some of my toms seem to be throwing trussess which themselves are throwing trussess. One main truss, with several other trusses coming off it. In total, some trussess have anything like three dozen toms in total on them. Obviously, these are going to be a nightmare to tie up to avoid breaking the trussess. Should I remove some?

That is very weird then, and no they won't support that many toms on one truss. The tom size would suffer as well. Snip back to a normal size truss.

Just had a shufti at the back of my packet of san marzano tom seeds and there is no reference about big trusses.  Thanks for the information, I shall be watching out.

Cheers,    Tony.

Here's some piccies. They don't really show accurately quite how many buds there are to each truss, but it should give you some idea.
First pic is Marmande.........I nipped out the flower bang in the centre as it was huge and didn't klook quite right. 2nd pic is marzano.

Can't put both pics together so here's the marzano.

There are 20 buds on the marmande and 25 on the marzano (they dont all show on the pics).

:D You may have that many flowers, but not necessarily that many tomatoes.....some of the flowers usually drop off, unpollinated.

Wait and see what the set is like, then either support or prune as required  ;)

I have grown "Britains Breakfast" in the past - fabulous Tomato, but really needs a 'proper' Greenhouse.  You only grow 'one' truss......small / medium Plum tomatoes, I have lost count at 70 'fruits' on one truss before now.....& they nearly all 'set' & fruit.  Huge, ever increasing fans of fruits which do need supplemental support as they grow.  The "season" usually ends before the plants / truss does.

The problem with Toms I have found is the equation between 'viable' leaf & fruit.  If you have not got leaves in good condition, feeding the plant, it struggles to fulfill the flowers/fruit.  If you have lots of healthy leaf growth & big trusses, I would think you are in luck.  If you balance the work of the plant by removing higher trusses or reduce the length of the truss, by snipping them, they should form up ok.
