Cabbage White Quandary
« on: August 25, 2011, 20:40 »
Anybody know the reason why Purple Kale doesn’t seem to be attacked by cabbage white butterflies or am I just lucky? I have Cabbage, Brussels, Kale - Cavolo De Nero, Mixed Salads, Radish and even Watercress that are absolutely plague with them but not a sign on Purple Kale! I do grow things under Enviromesh but there is a limit to how much mesh I can use. Even slugs don’t seem to like the Purple Kale! Makes me wonder whether its fit for human consumption

Same here  :D, and next year will add a fold of extra mesh to allow for growth! Theyre massive. (broccilli not cabbage whites), they are few and far between on them.
Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.

And nasturtiums. The cabbage whites in  my garden have completed ignored all the brassicas and gone straight for the nasturtiums, which are crawling with caterpillars. But my brassicas next to them are complete untouched, and that includes white, red and savoy cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and calabrese.

I just watched a TV programme that mentioned that watercress is a member of the Brassica family. No wonder my watercress is being savaged by cabbage white caterpillars!

Well you learn something every day  ::)
