What's the best way to store our apples?

Thanks Lorna, I'm glad we picked all of the remaining ones on Sunday, the wind would have taken them if not ::)

I wasn't sure if you meant storing them as whole "fresh" fruits too? I'm sure someone will have experience of the best way to do that. In a ccol place I would suggest.

My copy of "How to Store Your Home Grown Produce" is at home (and I'm not) or I could have told you what it says. (Only because I haven't memorised it yet ).

We had an orchard when i was growing up, and used to get some large cardboard apple boxes from shops/ supermarkets that had finished with theirs- they were really handy as they have "trays" with grooves to hold individual apples so that they don't touch-- so if one starts rotting it doesn't automatically spread to other apples.

If you can't get ones with these tray inserts in them, then you could make some... just put a layer of cardboard between apple layers and then use strips of cardboard between the apples... by weaving the cardboard in an 'S' or wavy shape between the apples... its a bit fiddly though but does help keep them seperate.

Alternatively there's always the wrapping them in greaseproof paper or newspaper (no coloured ink) trick...

The main thing is to keep them seperate and check on them from time to time.

I would add though that you might find your local grocery shops more helpful... more likely to hold the boxes for you- whereas Big T have so many shift patterns going on- everything gets lumped into the skip once finished, and they might struggle to find what you're looking for.
(My local supermarket was teeny... the countryside version of a no-brand supermarket... so i could get away with skip diving there lol)
