Title: Scented plants around a run
Post by: bexy on July 30, 2009, 19:59
Hi all.
Don't know if yhis has been asked before but here goes.

I was thinking about growing scented plants to go around the run to make it smell a wee bit more pleasant. :tongue2:
Any scented plants i should avoid.
I do have a fair bit of knowledge about plants but not ones that would have an ill effect on chickens.
I was thinking of things like Lavender, roses etc

I have got lavender in pots on my patio bordering my run as well as having climbing roses around the arch to the run. They can't be got at by the chooks unless I forget the gate, and look very pretty but, they don't do much smell wise  ::) I, like you, have been trying to think of more pleasant smelling plants to put along the patio  :) Hopefully some of the more garden orientated peeps will know. I'm really interest in annuals that are scented as well.

If you poo pick regularly it will minimise any smell.

If your run is small enough and you can have a roof on it the ground (or bark etc.) stays dry it will not smell at all.

Baileys garlic powder in their pellets deodorised poo too !

hiya bexy

i grow mint around my hens run, they like to nibble the odd bit off but it is so tuff it grows back really quickly - i think it would be impossible to kill, anyway when they nip off bits it smells lovely and also when it rains - its a bit rampant so you could grow it in tubs to keep it in check.  if you buy a pot of it you can just rip it apart and replant the bits of root to get loads of new plants , keep it moist and it'll be growing in no time. : :)

Do you sprinkle the run with Stalosan F?

We have Rosemary by ours. I find it's the only plant the chooks & ducks don't eat.
